The first time I talked to Mark Merenda of Smart Marketing, I found him to be knowledgeable about my profession — estate planning attorney — and both passionate and insightful about marketing professional services. Nonetheless, I did not engage his firm.
That was a mistake.
Why didn't I become a client then? I'm not sure. Perhaps it was the cost. Perhaps I was uncomfortable with the whole idea of marketing. Perhaps I just wasn't ready.
A year later, the estate planning business was being impacted by several national trends: a declining stock market, changes in the estate tax law, terrorism and war, among others. Attendance at my estate planning workshops was declining, revenues for my firm were flat, and I was struggling with a few key internal issues. I knew I needed help, and this time I signed up as a Smart Marketing client. I was still nervous about the cost, and uncertain about the results, but I felt I had to do something if I was going to get to the next level.
As I write this, I have been a Smart Marketing client less than three months, but there has already been a dramatic impact on my practice. Thus far, I have generated $56,000 in business that I would not have had otherwise (with a significant amount more still in progress); attendance at our workshops and seminars is wonderful; I am developing a whole new revenue source for my practice by adding Medicaid planning; my internal processes are improving through Mark Merenda's coaching; and I feel my firm is growing, instead of retreating.
The Smart Marketing staff are crackerjack: organized, responsive, a joy to work with. I have a hard time now imagining my practice without Smart Marketing. I hope I never have to find out.
Now if I'd only hired them a year earlier!
